Volunteering
The Ribbons Centre could not operate without the commitment
and enthusiasm of our volunteers, and we are always looking
to expand the team. If you want to know more about our volunteering
opportunities please take a look at these frequently asked questions.
You can also get in touch with our volunteer support worker
by telephone on 023 80225511 or by email at mich@ribbons-centre.co.uk

How much time do I need to volunteer for?
We ask all volunteers to commit to doing at least 2 shifts
per month. Shifts normally last for 4 hours and cover the
drop-in sessions on Tuesday afternoon/evening and Thursday
morning/afternoon. Volunteers are also expected to attend
volunteer meetings which usually take place on a Wednesday
bi-monthly. Apart from this, the extent to which you get involved
with the Centre is really up to you, and there are many other
times when we need volunteers. For example to fundraise on
World Aids Day which takes place on 1st December.

What is the recruitment process?
We will ask you to visit the Centre and bring in your application
form. If both parties want to proceed, we will send for the
2 references which you provided on the application form. If
these are satisfactory, you will be invited to attend the
next training sessions which normally take place on two consecutive
Saturdays. On completion of the training you will be asked
to attend a short informal interview. Because the role involves
working with vulnerable people, your application will also
be subject to a police CRB check.

I’m working full-time. Will
I still be able to volunteer?
Yes, there are opportunities to volunteer that do not require
you to be available Monday to Friday during the day.

What do volunteers do?
Volunteers run the drop-in sessions on Tuesday afternoon/evening
and Thursday morning/afternoon. Duties include getting the
Centre ready for opening, preparing a meal and supporting
service users. If you have particular skills or interests
that may benefit the Centre, such as I.T, graphic design,
fundraising, organising social events, advocacy experience
or administration, there are lots of other ways you can help
out.

Will I get training?
The Centre runs a comprehensive induction training programme
to equip you with all the skills necessary to become an effective
volunteer. The training usually takes place over two consecutive
Saturdays and is run by a range of professional working in
the field of HIV. Topics include HIV awareness, confidentiality,
appreciating difference, working with cultural diversity,
listening and communication skills.
The Centre is also committed to the ongoing development of
volunteers and operates a Volunteer Pathway. The Pathway has
three levels, and volunteers are offered support and training
to develop the core competencies needed to progress onto the
next level. By level three, volunteers will have the skills
and experience to be able to run the drop-in sessions without
supervision from paid staff.
